Hey everyone! My friend came over tonight and showed me this comic. Not only did it make me laugh, but it reminded me of semantics. Calvin is using semantics to excuse himself from having to do something "morally good". Relativity, definitions, and toleration to the extreme! He sure does have a way of beating around the bush. Wouldn't it just be easier to say, "I am too lazy make resolutions or keep myself accountable to them"? But, then again, that's what makes Calvin so great! So, happy three-day weekend. I hope this comic makes you laugh too!Emily T.

Well, not only is that what makes Calvin who he is, but it sounds so much better. Instead of making himself sound lazy, he makes it sound like the system is evil. Even the simplest changes in words can lead to a completely new attitude and meaning in a sentence.
Calvin doesn't even reply to the question asked. In fact, he uses abstratction to totally stray away from the topic at hand. He discusses virtue, instead, something that the audience may easily regard with a positive connotation. He establishes a warrant and simultaneously puts himself in a good light. Oh Calvin...

Hello
Calvin's rather lazy defense of himself reminds me of the greatness of semantics. He really knows how great an impact semantics has on people's minds and interpretation of the words.
By putting his own definitions and using slanted words, he attempts to turn his audience's attitude to his side. Nevertheless, we-who are not easily convincible as Calvin may wish-don't fall for his nifty little tricks.

Just a quick note: I love Calvin and Hobbs!
Anyways, Calvin is up to his usual tricks here. He's playing around with words and concepts, taking ideas out of context. He takes one specific connotation of one word, then links it to a separate connotation of the same word, and from there on, continues branching outwards. Hence, he ends up with a logically dubious conclusion.
